Islip is a town in New York State on the south shore of Long Island. Many people that travel to New York have their sights set on the larger area of New York City, but when looking for hotels Islip has plenty of options to consider as well.

Islip has over 300,000 residents so it is no small rural town. The city takes up about 163 square miles, though 57 of those miles are water. The town includes the Great South Bay and also part of Fire Island. Forming this city was quite a venture. It began in 1664 when a man from Islip, England moved to New York. In 1710, Islip was allowed to elect officials and in 1825 a light was installed on Fire Island to regulate the ferry services in the area. When the Long Island Railroad reached the area, people began to discover the city and the tourist trade became part of the economic structure.
Over the years, tourists have brought a lot of wealth to the area and a lot of businesses and hotels have sprung up throughout the town. Some tourists enjoy the area so much that they build summer homes there while others take advantage of the hotels Islip has to offer.
This city has many beautiful natural areas nearby including the Connetquot River State Park Preserve. This park allows many different activities, all of which have a low impact on conservation efforts. Visitors can hike, fish, cross country ski, snowshoe and explore the park museum. The park holds the Southside Club District, an official National Historic Place. You will need to buy a vehicle entrance pass in order to enter the park and keep in mindthat there are no garbage bins, play areas for children, or picnic facilities.
The Bayard Cutting Arboretum State Park is also in the area. The park is located along the Great River and has an extensive landscaped garden that was started in 1887 by the original owner. The home on the grounds was given to the state by its owners in order to provide a beautiful oasis and a quiet, restful area for visitors that enjoy outdoor beauty. The large home is called Westbrook and it is made up of many gables and tall chimneys. The house was built in a Tudor style and is open to the public for tours. Westbrook is one of the only estates on the south shore of Long Island that is open to the public.
Just to the east of Islip, Heckscher State Park lies on the Great South Bay shore. The park has nearly 1,500 acres and once held the estates of the city's founder. The park was purchased by the state and many wealthy residents opposed the original deal. Today, Heckscher has benches, picnic tables, pavilions, playing fields, playgrounds and many recreational activities and programs. Visitors can hike, bike, boat, swim and enjoy nature in this park. In the summers, the New York Philharmonic plays free concerts in the park as part of a series.
The Fire Island National Seashore is one area you will not want to miss when you visit Islip. This dynamic and diverse coast has an enchanting history and modern beauty all in the same place. The barrier island beaches offer solitude far away from the sounds of the big city. Fire Island is the ancestral home of one of the four Declaration of Independence signers, Island National Seashore including beach and water activities as well as museums and historic sites.
With New York City being a little over an hour away, many visitors enjoy taking a day trip to the larger city. The most popular sights to see if you are just visiting for one day are the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. If you want to get a better taste of the culture of the city, explore Times Square and the Theater District instead. If the pace of the city is too much for you, you might want to explore the various attractions within Central Park instead.
